Ball Python Shedding Guide

🔄 The shedding cycle
Ball pythons, like all snakes, shed their skin periodically as they grow. The process involves several stages:
- Pre-blue phase (1-2 weeks before): colors dull, eyes turn cloudy/milky blue, behavior changes
- Blue phase (2-7 days before): eyes are blue, snake may hide more, may refuse food
- Clearing phase (1-2 days before): eyes clear, colors return, snake becomes active again
- Shedding (10-30 minutes): snake rubs against surfaces, sheds in one piece
👀 Signs your snake is about to shed
🔵 The blue eyes
The most obvious sign: your ball python's eyes turn a cloudy, milky blue. This is the eye cap loosening. Don't worry — they can still see through the film.
🎨 Dull colors
The pattern looks faded or dusty. This is normal — the old skin is loosening from beneath.
😴 Less active
Many ball pythons hide more and are less active during the blue phase. This is normal — wait until after the shed to handle.
🍽️ Refusing food
It's common for ball pythons to refuse food during shedding. Don't force-feed — offer again after the shed.
✅ What a healthy shed looks like
A healthy ball python shed:
- Comes off in one continuous piece (like peeling a sock)
- Includes the eye caps (the clear pieces over the eyes)
- Is intact with no tears or holes
- Leaves no skin remaining on the snake
- The snake looks bright and colorful afterward
⚠️ Dealing with stuck shed
Stuck shed is usually caused by low humidity. If your ball python has retained skin:
🛁 Method 1: Soak
Place your snake in a shallow container of room-temperature water for 15-20 minutes. The water should be deep enough to cover the stuck shed but not drown the snake. After soaking, gently rub the loose skin with a damp cloth.
🧴 Method 2: Shedding aid
Use Reptile Shedding Aid spray or a 50/50 mix of water and coconut oil in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the stuck areas, wait 10 minutes, then gently rub off.
🧺 Method 3: Humidity box
For a snake with stubborn stuck shed all over: put damp sphagnum moss in a hide box and leave the snake in there for several hours. The humidity helps loosen the skin.
👁️ Retained eye caps
Eye caps (the clear scales over the eyes) sometimes don't come off with the rest of the shed. This is common in low humidity and usually easy to fix:
- Soak the snake for 15-20 minutes
- Use a damp cotton swab to gently grip the eye cap
- Apply very gentle, steady pressure — it should slide off
- Don't use tweezers — you could scratch the eye
If it won't come off after 2-3 attempts, see a reptile vet. Retained eye caps can cause eye infections and vision problems.
💧 Humidity for perfect sheds
The #1 cause of stuck shed is incorrect humidity. Ball pythons need 70-80% humidity during the blue/shedding phase:
- Use a digital hygrometer — don't guess
- Add a larger water bowl to increase ambient humidity
- Mist the enclosure once or twice daily during blue phase
- Use damp substrate (coconut fiber, cypress mulch)
- Provide a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss
- For stubborn shedders, use a shedding aid spray
