Ball Python Morphs Guide

❓ What is a morph?
A morph is a genetic color or pattern variation in ball pythons. Unlike albino (which is a mutation), morphs are selectively bred trait variations that occur naturally in the wild but are emphasized through captive breeding.
There are 100+ documented morphs, and breeders combine them to create "combo morphs" with unique looks. Prices range from $30 (normal) to $10,000+ for rare combos.
🧬 Basic genetics
Dominant / Co-dominant
Shows the trait if the snake has one copy (heterozygous) or two copies (homozygous). Both show the visual trait. Example: Pastel, Spider.
Recessive
Needs TWO copies (homozygous) to show the trait. If het (one copy), the snake looks normal but carries the gene. Example: Albino, Piebald.
When you see "het" (heterozygous), it means the snake carries the gene but doesn't show it visually. A 66% het means the snake has a 2/3 chance of carrying the gene.
🎨 Common morphs
🐍 Normal (Wild Type)
The natural brown/tan pattern. $30-50. Hardy and healthy — no genetic issues.
🟡 Albino
White background with yellow markings, red eyes. Recessive. $150-300. Beautiful but no more difficult to keep.
⚪ Piebald
Large white patches. One of the most striking morphs. Recessive. $200-500.
🟠 Pastel
Increased yellow and orange, lighter background. Co-dominant. $60-150. Very popular first "fancy" morph.
🕷️ Spider
Wavy pattern, slim body. Co-dominant. $60-150. ⚠️ Note: Spider morph is linked to a neurological issue called "wobble" — see warnings below.
🐆 Leopard
Reduced pattern, more spots. Recessive. $80-200.
🔥 Fire
Bright orange, reduced pattern. Co-dominant. $80-200.
🛒 What to buy as a beginner
Recommended for first-time owners:
- 1. Normal (wild type) — $30-50
- 2. Pastel — $60-100
- 3. Lemonblast (Pastel + Fire) — $80-150
- 4. Mojave — $80-150
- 5. Lesser / Butter — $60-120
These morphs are affordable, healthy, and widely available. Avoid complex combo morphs until you have experience — they cost more and can have hidden genetic issues.
🏠 Do morphs need different care?
No. All ball pythons — normal or morph — need the same care:
- 80-92°F warm side, 76-80°F cool side
- 60-70% humidity
- Appropriately sized prey (10-15% body weight)
- Two hides (warm and cool)
- Access to clean water
⚠️ Important warnings
Spider wobble
Spider morphs (and some Spider combos) are linked to a neurological condition called "wobble" — the snake has trouble coordinating its movements. It ranges from mild head wobble to severe corkscrewing. Many breeders now avoid Spider because of this welfare issue.
- Don't buy solely for looks: healthy > beautiful
- Buy from reputable breeders: avoid wild-caught and mill-bred snakes
- Ask about the parents: good breeders know their genetics
- Don't overpay: morph prices have dropped dramatically; $500 for something that used to be $5,000 is rarely worth it
