Ball Python Heating Guide

Updated August 1, 2026

Safety first: EVERY heat source must be connected to a quality thermostat. Never plug a heat mat, CHE, or lamp directly into a wall outlet โ€” you risk fire, burns, and killing your snake.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Target temperatures

๐Ÿ”ฅ Basking spot

88-92ยฐF

Not required for ball pythons โ€” they don't bask

โ˜€๏ธ Warm side

80-85ยฐF

Where the heat mat/CHE is placed

โ„๏ธ Cool side

76-80ยฐF

For thermoregulation

Night temps can drop to 72-75ยฐF โ€” most ball pythons are fine with a slight drop at night. Use digital thermometers on both sides, not guessing.

๐ŸŸซ Heat mats (under tank)

โœ… Pros

  • โ€ข Inexpensive ($10-25)
  • โ€ข Reliable, proven technology
  • โ€ข Easy to set up
  • โ€ข Good for tubs/racks
  • โ€ข Doesn't affect room humidity

โŒ Cons

  • โ€ข Only heats the surface, not air
  • โ€ข Can burn if not on thermostat
  • โ€ข Must be under tank, not inside
  • โ€ข Can fail without warning

Use a heat mat that covers 1/3 to 1/2 of the tank floor on the warm end. Always use with a thermostat. Place probe directly under the mat on the tank floor.

๐Ÿ”ด Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE)

โœ… Pros

  • โ€ข Heats air, not just surface
  • โ€ข Lasts for years
  • โ€ข No light โ€” works day/night
  • โ€ข Good for large enclosures

โŒ Cons

  • โ€ข Requires dome fixture
  • โ€ข Dries out enclosure
  • โ€ข Can be expensive to run
  • โ€ข Fire risk if not on thermostat

Use a CHE with a dimming thermostat (not on/off). 60-100 watts depending on room temperature. Essential for rooms that get cold in winter.

๐Ÿ”ฒ Radiant Heat Panels (RHP)

โœ… Pros

  • โ€ข Heats objects, not air
  • โ€ข Very safe โ€” surface doesn't get blazing hot
  • โ€ข Mounts on wall or ceiling
  • โ€ข Doesn't affect humidity much
  • โ€ข Quiet, no moving parts

โŒ Cons

  • โ€ข Expensive ($40-80+)
  • โ€ข Need correct size for enclosure
  • โ€ข Requires mounting
  • โ€ข May need CHE in very cold rooms

RHPs are the gold standard for PVC enclosures. Mount on the warm side wall. Size to enclosure: a 40-gallon needs roughly a 40-watt panel.

๐Ÿ’ก DHP & Halogen Lamps

โš ๏ธ Not recommended for ball pythons

Heat lamps (DHP, halogen, deep heat projector) are popular for lizards but not ideal for ball pythons:

If you must use a DHP: use it as secondary heat only, not primary. Always use with a dimming thermostat, and monitor humidity closely.

๐Ÿ”Œ The thermostat is essential

Every heat source needs a thermostat. This is non-negotiable for safety:

Spend $25-50 on a quality thermostat โ€” it's the most important piece of equipment you can buy.

๐ŸŽฏ Recommended setup

Best combo for most ball pythons:

  1. 1. Heat mat on warm side floor (under tank)
  2. 2. CHE on warm side (if room gets below 70ยฐF at night)
  3. 3. Both connected to a dimming thermostat
  4. 4. Digital thermometer + hygrometer on both sides
