Night temps can drop to 72-75°F — most ball pythons are fine with a slight drop at night. Use digital thermometers on both sides, not guessing.
🟫 Heat mats (under tank)
✅ Pros
- • Inexpensive ($10-25)
- • Reliable, proven technology
- • Easy to set up
- • Good for tubs/racks
- • Doesn't affect room humidity
❌ Cons
- • Only heats the surface, not air
- • Can burn if not on thermostat
- • Must be under tank, not inside
- • Can fail without warning
Use a heat mat that covers 1/3 to 1/2 of the tank floor on the warm end. Always use with a thermostat. Place probe directly under the mat on the tank floor.
🔴 Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE)
✅ Pros
- • Heats air, not just surface
- • Lasts for years
- • No light — works day/night
- • Good for large enclosures
❌ Cons
- • Requires dome fixture
- • Dries out enclosure
- • Can be expensive to run
- • Fire risk if not on thermostat
Use a CHE with a dimming thermostat (not on/off). 60-100 watts depending on room temperature. Essential for rooms that get cold in winter.
🔲 Radiant Heat Panels (RHP)
✅ Pros
- • Heats objects, not air
- • Very safe — surface doesn't get blazing hot
- • Mounts on wall or ceiling
- • Doesn't affect humidity much
- • Quiet, no moving parts
❌ Cons
- • Expensive ($40-80+)
- • Need correct size for enclosure
- • Requires mounting
- • May need CHE in very cold rooms
RHPs are the gold standard for PVC enclosures. Mount on the warm side wall. Size to enclosure: a 40-gallon needs roughly a 40-watt panel.
💡 DHP & Halogen Lamps
⚠️ Not recommended for ball pythons
Heat lamps (DHP, halogen, deep heat projector) are popular for lizards but not ideal for ball pythons:
- • Dry out the enclosure rapidly
- • Can cause eye issues (squinting, eye caps stuck)
- • Create dangerous hot spots
- • Ball pythons don't bask in the wild
If you must use a DHP: use it as secondary heat only, not primary. Always use with a dimming thermostat, and monitor humidity closely.
🔌 The thermostat is essential
Every heat source needs a thermostat. This is non-negotiable for safety:
- On/off thermostat: cheap but turns full on/full off — temperature swings. Okay for heat mats in small enclosures.
- Dimming thermostat: adjusts power smoothly — keeps stable temps. Required for CHE, DHP, RHP.
- Proportional thermostat: most precise, professional-grade. Worth the investment for serious keepers.
Spend $25-50 on a quality thermostat — it's the most important piece of equipment you can buy.

Best combo for most ball pythons:
- 1. Heat mat on warm side floor (under tank)
- 2. CHE on warm side (if room gets below 70°F at night)
- 3. Both connected to a dimming thermostat
- 4. Digital thermometer + hygrometer on both sides
