How to Handle Your Ball Python
Updated August 1, 2026
โฐ When to handle
Wait at least 7-14 days after bringing a new ball python home before handling. Let them:
- โ Settle into their new enclosure
- โ Eat at least once successfully
- โ Have consistent hides on both warm and cool sides
When NOT to handle:
- โ During the blue phase (eyes cloudy) โ they're stressed
- โ The day after feeding โ they need to digest
- โ If the snake seems stressed or defensive
- โ If they're in a hide โ don't pull them out
โ How to pick up your ball python
โ Do:
- โข Approach from the side, not above
- โข Let the snake see your hand coming
- โข Support the body fully โ don't dangle
- โข Let the snake crawl through your hands
- โข Use slow, deliberate movements
- โข Wash your hands first (no strong scents)
โ Don't:
- โข Grab the snake suddenly from above
- โข Pick up by the head or tail only
- โข Restrain the snake if it wants to go
- โข Handle with cold hands
- โข Handle near other pets
- โข Make sudden movements
๐ During handling
A well-handled ball python will:
- Explore calmly (not frantic escape attempts)
- Press into your hands for warmth
- Stay relaxed โ body not coiled tight
- Occasionally flick its tongue to explore
If the snake balls up: respect the stress signal. Put them back in the enclosure and try again another day.
๐ฆ Taming a new ball python
Some ball pythons are more defensive โ especially wild-caught or minimally handled adults. Here's how to build trust:
- Start with short sessions: 5-10 minutes max
- Handle 2-3 times per week โ consistency builds trust
- Keep sessions calm: no loud noises, no other people
- Let them hide: if they burrow into your shirt, that's okay โ they're seeking security
- Feed by hand: once tame, offer a pre-killed mouse with tongs while holding โ builds association
- Be patient: some snakes take weeks, others months
โ ๏ธ Signs of stress
Put the snake back if you see:
- โข Tightly coiled in a ball despite being calm
- โข Aggressive striking or hissing
- โข Trying to flee frantically
- โข Musking (releasing a stinky fluid)
- โข Breathing heavily / gaping
